Description

This activity is supported by an independent education grant from Lilly. This online education program has been designed for healthcare professionals globally, excluding the UK.

Join leading experts Dr Philip Mease, MD, Dr Alice Gottlieb, MD, PhD and Dr Joseph Merola MD MMSc for this accredited virtual live roundtable. Utilizing immersive, narrative-style clinical cases and interactive decision-making trees, this expert-led session equips rheumatologists and multidisciplinary healthcare providers with the tactical, evidence-based strategies needed to confidently navigate the complex obesity-inflammation axis in Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA), optimize precision treatment selection beyond routine drug escalation, and proactively co-manage metabolic and joint outcomes through patient-centered, coordinated care.

Participants will gain actionable strategies for overcoming clinical hesitation, navigating the complexities of the obesity-inflammation axis, and implementing the proactive, multidisciplinary care pathways essential for managing concurrent metabolic treatments and maximizing long-term musculoskeletal and systemic outcomes in Psoriatic Arthritis care.

Session Highlights

  • Decoding the Obesity-Inflammation Axis: Reset your clinical interpretation of disease activity by exploring how obesity acts as a central, treatment-relevant driver of symptoms, allowing you to confidently differentiate between persistent, systemic inflammation and non-inflammatory metabolic factors.
  • Master Precision Selection Beyond Automatic Drug Escalation: Break the default habit of escalating biologic or DMARD therapies in complex patients by analyzing real-world, high-ambiguity PsA scenarios to tailor treatment to the patient's full metabolic profile.
  • Communication Mastery for Stigma-Free Shared Decision-Making: Acquire concrete, patient-centered communication techniques and non-stigmatizing language to comfortably initiate sensitive weight management discussions, align expectations for concurrent joint and metabolic improvements, and protect patient trust.
  • Building Coordinated, Multidisciplinary Care Pathways: Overcome clinical hesitation around the care transition by learning how to seamlessly integrate modern systemic anti-obesity therapies into your existing PsA care plans and establish proactive, coordinated referral pathways with metabolic specialists.

Who Should Watch

This program is designed for healthcare professionals globally involved in the clinical management, treatment selection, and long-term care of patients with Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) and coexisting obesity, including:

  • Rheumatologists (MDs, DOs) (Primary treatment decision-makers across the United States and Europe, excluding the UK)

Faculty

Philip Mease, MD, is the Director of Rheumatology Research at Swedish Medical Center/Providence St. Joseph Health and a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. A globally recognized leader in spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), Dr. Mease has authored over 550 journal articles, including a seminal 2000 Lancet paper that established the efficacy of anti-TNF therapy in PsA. He is the Past President and Founding Organizer of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA), the Director of the PsA–SpA arm of the CorEvitas registry, and an active contributor to the ACR-NPF Psoriatic Arthritis treatment guidelines task force. Recognized as an American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Master and recipient of the National Psoriasis Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award, his research focuses on outcome measure development and evaluating the efficacy and safety of emerging therapeutics.

Alice Gottlieb, MD, PhD, is the Director of Clinical Trials in the Department of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where she leads the expansion of clinical research infrastructure and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration. A world-renowned pioneer in immunobiologic therapies, Dr. Gottlieb conducted the landmark first randomized controlled trial demonstrating the efficacy of TNF blockers as monotherapy for moderate-to-severe psoriasis, a breakthrough that transformed the treatment landscape for both psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. She has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications and previously held major leadership roles at Tufts Medical Center and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. A former member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology, she continues to serve on the boards of several prominent international dermatology organizations.

Joseph Merola, MD, MMSc, is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology and a Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Rheumatic Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Nationally recognized as one of the very few physicians triple board-certified in dermatology, internal medicine, and rheumatology, Dr Merola is a premier international authority on the intersection of immune-mediated skin and joint diseases. His extensive leadership in the field includes serving as Co-President of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) and founding President of the Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis Clinics Multicenter Advancement Network (PPACMAN) Consortium. An acclaimed researcher and educator with over 400 peer-reviewed publications, Dr Merola brings his unparalleled dual-specialty insights to this online teaching session to provide clinicians with highly practical, cutting-edge strategies for managing psoriatic arthritis.

Learning objectives

  1. Recognize the obesity-inflammation axis as a treatment-relevant inflammatory and disease modifier in PsA, including its impact on disease activity and treatment response, to inform clinical reasoning and comprehensive interpretation of disease activity.
  2. Apply individualized treatment strategies that systematically incorporate obesity and metabolic factors when evaluating disease activity  (including emerging evidence on the co-management of weight-loss therapies) in people with PsA to optimize joint and systemic control whilst managing adverse events.
  3. Apply patient-centred communication strategies to initiate and integrate weight management discussions into PsA care, including setting realistic expectations for concurrent joint and metabolic improvements and supporting shared decision-making.
  4. Integrate weight management into PsA care pathways by identifying appropriate patients and facilitating timely treatment, referral or shared care with obesity specialists - including building confidence in co-managing modern systemic anti-obesity therapies - to support coordinated, multidisciplinary management and improve outcomes.
