Join renowned experts Professor David Livermore and Professor Karen Burns for this free online session focused on the latest advances in the global fight against antibiotic resistance. This session is designed for healthcare professionals worldwide who are looking to enhance their understanding of how antibiotic resistance is spreading and what can be done to manage it effectively. Addressing Metallo-β-Lactamase (MBL)-producing bacteria as a key example, our expert speakers will explore strategies for diagnosing and treating resistant infections. Participants will gain insights into laboratory techniques, antimicrobial therapies, and strategies for managing resistant pathogens, ultimately contributing to global efforts to curb the growing threat of antibiotic resistance.

Optimizing Diagnostic Strategies for MBL-Producing Bacterial Infections

Understand the critical role of diagnostic testing in the rapid detection of MBL-producing bacterial infections to ensure early and accurate diagnosis. Attendees will learn how to select between genotypic and phenotypic laboratory tests, with a clear understanding of the advantages and limitations of each method. The session will cover accurate interpretation of test results to confirm the presence of MBL-producing bacteria, aiding in effective treatment and infection control.

Communicate with Patients and Families:

Enhance your ability to counsel patients and their families on the impact of MBL-producing infections. Understand how to explain treatment options, the importance of therapy adherence, and the need for ongoing monitoring.

Faculty

Professor David Livermore

David Livermore earned his BSc in 1978 and PhD in 1983. He worked at the London Hospital Medical College until 1997, then joined the Health Protection Agency (now Public Health England), becoming Director of its Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring and Reference Laboratory in 1998. In 2011, he was appointed Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of East Anglia, while also serving as Public Health England’s Lead on Antibiotic Resistance.

His research focuses on the evolution of antibiotic resistance, with a particular interest in beta-lactamases, including the proliferation of CTX-M enzymes and NDM-1 carbapenemases. He has served on multiple advisory boards and publishes widely on antimicrobial resistance.

Professor Karen Burns

Professor Karen Burns is a Consultant Clinical Microbiologist and the Lead Consultant for Infection Prevention & Control at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. She is also an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland University of Medicine & Health Sciences. Her research interests include surveillance of healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and consumption, infection prevention & control, Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE), and antimicrobial stewardship.

  1. Assess the laboratory capacity of their healthcare setting to detect MBL-producing bacteria and advocate for necessary improvements or collaborations:
  • Evaluate the existing diagnostic capabilities for identifying MBL-producing bacteria, including both genotypic and phenotypic testing methods.
  • Identify gaps in current laboratory capacities and develop a plan for enhancing testing capabilities or forming partnerships with equipped laboratories.
  1. Counsel patients and their families on the implications of MBL-producing bacterial infections, including treatment options and the importance of adherence to prescribed therapies:
  • Communicate effectively about the complexity of MBL-producing bacterial infections and the challenges they pose to treatment.
  • Discuss the importance of following the treatment plan, potential side effects, and the need for follow-up to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
