Description

This program is supported by an independent educational grant from Pfizer. This online education program has been designed for healthcare professionals globally.

Join thoracic oncology experts Dr. Urs Weber and Dr. Kyle Concannon for this free, accredited, 60-minute interactive virtual session that bridges the gap between clinical data and the human experience. Moving far beyond standard guideline recaps, this unique masterclass delivers a dual-perspective learning journey—directly charting how high-stakes medical decisions intersect with the real-world anxieties, information overload, and lived realities of patients and their care partners.

Participants will learn tactical, evidence-backed strategies to confidently recognize subtle neurocognitive adverse events, streamline multidisciplinary communication, and master preference-informed shared decision-making in daily practice.

Accreditation: 0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™

Session Overview

  • Preparing Patients and Care Partners for ALK Inhibitor Therapy: This segment covers clinical methods for prioritizing information, setting clear expectations, and assessing patient readiness at treatment initiation. It also addresses how patients and care partners can successfully navigate information overload, uncertainty, and emotional adjustments following their diagnosis.
  • Early Recognition of Neurocognitive and Functional Adverse Events: Faculty will demonstrate how to interpret subtle cognitive, mood, and functional shifts to determine timely clinical assessment and escalation. This is paired with insights into the patient experience of noticing treatment-related changes that feel "off" but are highly difficult to articulate or contextualize.
  • Activating Early Reporting and Care-Team Communication: Clinicians will learn to establish clear reporting thresholds and structured multidisciplinary communication pathways to minimize reactive case management. Concurrently, the discussion focuses on helping patients and care partners understand what clinical changes matter, when to report them, and exactly who to contact.
  • Facilitating Preference-Informed Decision-Making Over Time: The session explores frameworks for regularly revisiting benefit–risk definitions and adapting clinical recommendations as a patient's care journey evolves. It highlights practical ways to capture and respect the patient's changing values, risk tolerance, fatigue, and life priorities over time.

Faculty

Dr Urs Weber, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a practicing clinician at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. He earned his medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine and completed his hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Colorado. Dr. Weber specializes in thoracic malignancies, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), mesothelioma, and rare chest cavity tumors. His research focuses on designing clinical trials, optimizing treatment sequencing, and overcoming resistance mechanisms in oncogene-addicted lung cancers, specifically ALK- and ROS1-rearranged disease.

Dr Kyle Concannon, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a thoracic medical oncologist at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. He completed his physician-scientist training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center before joining the faculty at the University of Colorado. Dr. Concannon's research laboratory focuses on defining why oncogene-driven lung cancers—specifically those with EGFR, HER2, ALK, or ROS1 mutations—develop resistance to therapy and creating innovative strategies to overcome it. In addition to his clinical and translational research work, he co-hosts the Cracking Cancer podcast alongside several patient partners to support and educate the broader lung cancer community.
