This session discusses modelling real-world clinical decision-making in alcohol use disorders (AUD), enabling physicians to close the critical implementation gaps in AUD care.

The symposium is planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and European Board for Accreditation of Continuing Education for Health Professionals (EBAC).

Session Highlights

This session examines a real-world case study to aid clinical decision making in AUD.

• The structured discussion and real-time audience polling at defined clinical inflection points, allows the session to focus on strengthening timely identification of AUD, patient-centred treatment planning, multidisciplinary team coordination with evidence integration throughout.
• Opening with a rapid-fire "Global Pulse" poll to establish an immediate benchmark of the care gap in AUD, the symposium will then follow a case study with live interactive decision making.
• Expert faculty commentary will intersperse the live session to collaboratively build the best model for three key areas in the AUD pathway - Identification & Diagnosis, Treatment Planning & Goal Alignment and Coordinated Care & Evidence Integration.

Faculty

Dr. Néstor Szerman, MD, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, is internationally recognised for his expertise in addictions and dual disorders. His career has been dedicated to advancing research and treatment in this field. He currently practises at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, and he was the Founding President of the Spanish Society of Dual Disorders (2005-2016) and is President of the World Association on Dual Disorders (WADD) (2024-2027), Chair of the WPA Section on Dual Disorders, President of the Dual Disorders Foundation (since 2016) and Co-Director “catedra patologia dual” Francisco de Vitoria University, Spain.

He has served on the Spanish State Council for Addictions (National Plan on Drugs) since 2016 and on the Scientific Commission of the State Council on Responsible Gambling since 2019. He provided expert advice on comorbidities for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 2017 and has been an International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has authored over 100 indexed scientific articles in the field of dual disorders, is an active participant in numerous research studies on Dual Disorders, a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and editor of various scientific and educational books in his field of research.

Professor Amandine Luquiens, MD, PhD, Nîmes University Hospital, France, is a Psychiatrist and Addiction Specialist. She has been a full professor at Montpellier University and in the Addiction Department at the Nîmes University Hospital since 2019, after having worked 8 years at the APHP (University Hospitals of Paris Sud). Her research work focuses on subjective measures in addiction and, in particular, on quality of life, early detection and innovative psychotherapy-related interventions, particularly online, in the fields of gambling, gaming and alcohol use disorders. She is currently conducting the first clinical trial in France with psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and also works on account-based gambling data. Her work aims to develop the patient-centred approach and to reduce the treatment gaps in addiction by adapting the care offered to the needs of people with addiction. She is a member of the CESP-Inserm U1018, an administrator of the French Society of Alcoholology (since 2017), vice-president of the National University College of Addictology Teachers (CUNEA) and of the National Network for the Prevention and Care of Pathological Gambling (RNPSJP). She also coordinates the University Diploma “Pathologie duelle: la comorbidité psychiatrique et addictologique” at the University of Montpellier.

Professor Khaled Moussawi, MD, PhD, UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, San Francisco, USA, is an Associate Professor in Residence in the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). A physician-scientist, Dr. Moussawi specializes in behavioural neurology and neuropsychiatry, with a dedicated research focus on substance use disorders. His work leverages advanced neuromodulation techniques, including deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound, to explore innovative therapeutic interventions for addiction. Dr. Moussawi earned his MD/PhD from the Medical University of South Carolina. His extensive clinical and research training includes residencies and fellowships at Harvard Medical School (Massachusetts General Hospital), Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Prior to his current role at UCSF, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

Throughout his career, Dr. Moussawi has been recognized for his significant contributions to the field, notably holding the Howard L. Fields Endowed Chair and serving as a Weill Neurohub Investigator. His research on the neurobiology of addiction is widely published in high-impact journals, reflecting his commitment to translating scientific insights into clinical solutions for complex neuropsychiatric conditions.
