Optimising OSA in Evidence Translation: SLEEP 2026 Highlights

Share

Description

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Lilly.

Join Charlene Gamaldo, MD, Professor of Neurology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, in a discussion on translating the latest evidence from the SLEEP 2026 Annual Meeting into real-world obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) practice. This module explores strategies to move beyond CPAP monotherapy by leveraging disease endotypes and phenotypes to personalize care, integrating anti-obesity pharmacotherapy into sleep management pathways, and structuring therapy selection, sequencing, and long-term patient monitoring.

Session highlights

  • Evaluate treatment triggers and CPAP alternatives: Identify when PAP monotherapy is insufficient or poorly tolerated and determine clinical criteria for escalating to alternative or multimodal options.
  • Select and sequence non-PAP interventions: Apply physiological endotyping and clinical phenotypes to guide non-PAP modalities, including oral appliances, positional therapy, and surgical interventions.
  • Integrate weight management into OSA care: Incorporate anti-obesity medications into comprehensive treatment plans, manage side effects, and establish coordinated shared-care pathways.
  • Optimize long-term management and reassessment: Implement structured follow-up routines to track therapy persistence, address treatment tolerability, and strategically time repeat sleep testing during weight changes or therapy transitions.

Learning objectives

By the end of this program HCP's should be better able to:

  • Evaluate patient-specific clinical and treatment factors to determine when PAP remains appropriate and when escalation to alternative or combination strategies is required, achieving appropriate treatment decisions in ≥75% of case-based assessments.

  • Apply evidence-based criteria to select, sequence, and combine non-PAP therapies (e.g., oral appliances, surgical options, combination approaches) in the management of OSA, achieving appropriate decision-making in ≥75% of simulation-based scenarios.

  • Integrate weight management into OSA treatment planning by initiating, coordinating, or referring to appropriate weight management strategies, demonstrating appropriate incorporation in ≥70% of applied clinical cases.

  • Implement structured reassessment, adherence management, and patient-centred decision-making strategies to optimise OSA treatment through adjustment, switching, or combination approaches, achieving appropriate management decisions in ≥75% of longitudinal case scenarios.
